The start

This is my first attempt at writing a blog, so forgive me please for what may be a poor attempt at a first post!

This blog, as indicated by the title, is about invasive species and the effect they have on the environment they invade, whether or not they are detrimental or helpful, brought in naturally, accidentally or purposefully and how they are aided by a changing climate. I am going to investigate the effects of invasive species on the decline of megafauna in the past and investigate how invasive species coupled with possible climate change played their part in their demise. I also plan to investigate invasive species more presently and how, through globalization, alien invasions have become more common and  used as a tool to reduce environmental impacts brought about by anthropogenic activities. While investigating this i will look at how a changing environment may be conducive in enabling invasive species to become more established and potentially eradicating, or aiding, the invaded environment.

By the end of this blog i hope to have provided an insight into how the pathways along which invasive species travel has changed, and how changing environmental factors has potentially influenced their establishment through looking into the decline of megafauna and invasive species in recent history. I hope you enjoy it.

  1. congrats on your first post! Will you tackle just invasive species, or will you consider animal introductions as well (e.g. rats on oceanic islands)?

  2. Yes, i am going to consider that, as well as potentially looking at future introductions/invasions.
